MNF-Professor Michael Schaepan invited to become member of ESA's Earth Science Advisory Committee

Based on an invitation from Jean-Jacques Dordain, director general of the European Space Agency (ESA), Michael Schaepman has been invited to become member of ESA's Earth Science Advisory Committee (ESAC).

The task of ESA's science advisory committees are to implement the vision of a science-led ESA. ESA has science advisory committees on space science, Earth science, human spaceflight, exploration science, and GNSS science.

ESAC is ESA's senior scientific advisory body of the Earth Observation Programme (EOP). It's tasks are to advise on science, formulate and update medium and long term Earth science policy, prioritize Earth science missions, recommend scientific studies for future missions, and select new scientific projects. The ESAC also has the highest-level advisory capacity, for matters to be treated at the level of the Earth
Observation Programme Board (EOP-PB), where delegates of all ESA member
states are represented.

Michael Schaepman has contributed to ESA's EOP scientific assessment as chairman in 2006 and as participant in 2010. The programme runs all Earth observation satellites and related activities of ESA with - at the time - a total value of EUR 1'400 Mio. He has further co-authored ESA's 'Living Planet' strategy, resulting in a comprehensive observational scheme for Earth System Science. He served on several mission advisory groups, including the current ESA Sentinel-2 land mission. He is principal investigator of the joint Swiss/Belgium ESA APEX imaging spectrometer and has contributed to numerous ESA instruments design and analysis.

ESA's director Dordain invites Michael Schaepman with 'the international reputation you so rightly enjoy' to serving on ESAC for a four year term.
