New materials for future electronics


Spintronics is an emerging field of electronics, where instead of using the charge of electrons, devices work by manipulating electron spin. Together with scientists form PSI, EPFL and from abroad Jürg Osterwalder and his team recently decipered the spin texture of Bi2Se3. In their recently published article in Physical Review Letters they show how a normal material can become a topological insulator - a new class of material that act as insulators on the inside, but are highly conductive on their surface - and how to implement it for real technological impact.
