Honors and Distinctions in 2003

Prof. Dr. Aguzzi Adriano, Full Professor of Neuropathology, was recognized for his groundbreaking discoveries in the area of prion diseases with this year's Robert Koch Prize. 

Prof. Dr. Berke Heinz, Full Professor of Inorganic Chemistry, was appointed Permanent Honorary Professor by the University of Guanxi in Guilin, China.

Prof. Dr. Bernoulli Daniel, Professor Emeritus of Geology, was awarded the Leopold von Buch Medal by the German Geological Society in recognition of his scientific work on the past and present relationship between sedimentation and tectonics at plate edges.

Prof. Dr. Blanckenhorn Wolf, Privatdozent in Zoology, was elected President of the Swiss Zoological Society Swiss Zoological Society.

Prof. Dr. Burga Conradin A., Adjunct Professor of Geography, specializing in Physical Geography, was elected Vice President of Reinhold-Tüxen-Gesellschaft e.V. für Vegetationskunde, a Hanover-based society for plant sociology, at its general meeting.

Prof. Dr. Endress Peter, Full Professor of Systematic Botany, was elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Prof. Dr. Grossniklaus Ueli, Full Professor of Developmental Plant Biology, was appointed Foreign Visiting Professor at Sunchon National University in Korea and elected as a member of the Board of Directors of the International Society for Plant Molecular Biology (ISPMB). 

Prof. Dr. Hengartner Michael, Full Professor of Molecular Biology, received the Friedrich Miescher Prize from the Union of the Swiss Societies for Experimental Biology. He and a Spanish researcher were conferred with the Dr. Josef Steiner Cancer Research Award. Dr. Hengartner also became a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization, which is only open to a very select group of scientists. 

Prof. Dr. Kubli, part-time Associate Professor of Zoology, was awarded an honorary doctorate at this year's dies academicus of the University of Basel for his efforts to establish and organize the Swiss Study Foundation. 

Prof. Dr. Martinoia Enrico, Full Professor of Plant Biology, was elected into the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. 

Prof. Dr. Plückthun Andreas, Full Professor of Biochemistry, was elected into the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. 

Prof. Dr. Wehner Rüdiger, Full Professor of Zoology, was presented with an honorary doctorate by the University of Lundin recognition of his scientific achievements.
