Honors and Distinctions in 2013

Norman Backhaus, Adjunct Professor of Human Geography was appointed Chairman of the Research Committee of Swiss National Park by SCNAT on 1 January 2013.

Bernd Bodenmiller, Assistant Professor of Quantitative Biology, received an ERC Starting Grant for his project “Three Dimensional Single Cell Analysis of the Cancer Stem Cell inducing Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition Signaling Networks in Breast Cancer by Mass Cytometry”.

Alberto Cattaneo, Full Professor of Mathematics, was appointed as an international member of the newly established committee Italian National Scientific Qualification for Mathematical Physics.

Camillo De Lellis, Full Professor of Pure Mathematics, received the Fermat Prize 2013.

Raimund Dutzler, Full Professor of Biochemistry, received an ERC Advanced Grant for his research project “Structure, function and pharmacology of calcium-activated chloride channels: Anoctamines and Bestrophins”.

Martin Jinek, Assistant Professor at the Department of Biochemistry, received an ERC Starting Grant for his project “Structural and Mechanistic Studies of RNA-guided and RNA-targeting Antiviral Defense Mechanisms”.

Arpat Ozgul, Assistant Professor of Population Ecology, received an ERC Starting Grant for his project “Demographic and Phenotypic Signals of Population Responses to Environmental Change”.

Michael Schaepman, Full Professor of Geography, Remote Sensing, was elected to the ESA’s Earth Science Advisory Committee (ESAC).

Calls to Professorships at Other Universities

Jan Hugo Dil, Senior Teaching and Research Assistant at the Department of Physics, took up a new post as SNSF Assistant Professor at the EFPL’s Institute of Physics (Condensed Matter Group), commencing 1 July 2013.

Thomas Gehrmann, Full Professor of Theoretical Physics, was called to, but did not accept, two professorships in theoretical physics: at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and at RWTH Aachen University.

Andrew Hector, Associate Professor at the Department of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Studies took up the post of Associate Professor of Ecology at Oxford University, England, commencing 31 July 2013.

Andreas Plückthun, Full Professor of Biochemistr,y was called to, but did not accept, a professorship from VIB: Flemish Life Science Research Institute (Collaborative research center of UGent, KU Leuven, University of Antwerp and Vrije Universiteit Brussel).

Lindsay Ann Turnbull, Research Associate at the Department of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Studies, took up the post of Privatdozent at the Department of Plant Sciences, Oxford University, England, commencing 31 July 2013.
